Free Software Favourites
My gift to start the new year:
Free Software!! It’s not just for geeks any more!!
Firefox: Free internet browsing software.
This is the one everyone should use. Firefox is sooooo much better than Explorer. Just the spell checker with editable dictionary is worth the download. The bonus of not dealing with microsoft is a side benefit.
Linux Free operating system.
The linux guys started the Free Software movement Ok many if not most webservers run on Linux but you can run Linux on your home computer. It has now become a real alternative to Windows.I just got this installed on a drive in my new computer and am really looking forward to exploring its possibilities.
Gimp: Free Graphic manipulation program. Life without photoshop.
Ok the software gets pretty geeky from here on so non-geeks can stop reading now.
WinSCP: Free Secure file transfer to servers connects with a sftp or scp connection.
Putty: Execute commands from a shell prompt.
Wordpress: Great blogging software.
Joomla: The world’s best content management system. (though Drupal is supposed to be good I just have not used it).
Oscommerce: Half the ecommerce sites on the internet seem to be running on this open source shopping cart solution. Amazing catalogue of modifications from a very active user community.
If you guys have more suggestions please leave them in the comments!!
