Kind People in the City
I had a really nice experience earlier this week that I just have to share: My son Jake was on his way home from swimming lessons with his grandmother and he forgot his “Thomas the Tank Engine” lunch box on the streetcar.
Jake likes order.
Jake likes Thomas more than order.
Jake is 4.
So you can imagine how upset he would be about losing this prized possession.
Jake was beside himself with sadness and cried buckets of tears.
Finally Jake was consolable and we were able to have dinner. After a lovely dinner the telephone rang.
“Do you have a son named Jake?” a voice asked.
“Yes,” I answered.
“Does he have a Thomas the Tank Engine lunch box?” it asked again.
“Yes,” I answered.
“I have it!” the voice said.
A limousine driver had spotted the lunch box abandoned on the street car and had taken it with him.
He then looked up “Whitla” in the phone book (we of course had Jake’s name on a piece of masking tape).
He guessed that the Whitlas who lived on “Wright Ave” might have been on the College car. Lucky for us he drove a limo and knows the street names of the city.
I found out he lives near the YMCA I play squash at and he left it for me there with this note in it:

Gotta like it the guy’s name was Thomas.
